Get the Look: Modern Coastal Dining Room Transformation

A dining room should be as inviting as it is beautiful. For this Charleston home, we transformed a blank slate into a space full of warmth, texture, and style. From the slate blue walls to the sculptural chandelier and vintage-inspired rug, every element works together to create a dining room that feels timeless, coastal, and welcoming.

A Dining Room Craving Character

When we first began designing this dining room, it was a true blank slate with Repose Gray walls and an oversized chandelier that didn’t quite fit the space. It was neutral and functional but lacked the character and warmth the homeowner wanted. Our goal was to make it feel fresh, coastal, and inviting—a room that could handle both everyday meals and special gatherings.

Wainscoting and Color That Transformed the Walls

To add architectural detail, we installed wainscoting along the lower half of the walls. On top, we painted in Sherwin-Williams Slate Tile—a blue-gray shade that’s bold enough to make a statement but still feels timeless. The contrast of crisp white trim with the deeper wall color completely elevated the room.

A Chandelier That Makes A Statement

Lighting can change everything in a dining room. This tiered chandelier, with its woven texture and bold silhouette, brings both drama and warmth. It instantly became the focal point of the space — functional for dining, but also sculptural enough to feel like art.

Dining Table and Chairs

We selected a round farmhouse-style dining table, which fits the scale of the room better than a rectangular option and creates a natural flow for conversation. Around it, six wood-and-leather chairs bring warmth and comfort without feeling too formal. The combination of warm wood, leather detail, and soft upholstery makes them versatile enough for everyday dinners but elevated enough for entertaining.

The Perfect Coastal Rug

Every dining room needs a rug that grounds the space. This vintage-inspired wool rug is one of our personal favorites. Its soft color palette and subtle pattern tie the furniture and wall color together, while adding texture underfoot.

Coastal Artwork

For the final detail, we hung a large photograph of Folly Beach. It’s simple, personal, and a perfect nod to Charleston. Artwork is always the finishing layer that makes a room feel complete, and in this case, it ties the design back to the homeowners’ love of the coast.

From Vision to Reality

This Charleston dining room is proof that even a blank slate can become a space full of personality and charm with the right design choices. By layering color, texture, and thoughtful details, it’s now a room that invites people to gather, linger, and enjoy.
